What began as a difficult chapter marked by financial loss and uncertainty has evolved into a thriving dance community attracting students from across the region. Today, Ric Banks Dance Academy has become a recognised name in Dubai’s growing lifestyle and entertainment scene.
Banks arrived in Dubai in 2012 with plans to build a future, but soon faced a major setback after a business partner disappeared with his savings. Rather than leaving the UAE, he chose to rebuild from scratch. With limited resources, he moved to Ajman and focused entirely on his passion for dance.
Humble start
He initially taught Salsa, Bachata, and Kizomba through private home sessions, charging minimal fees to support himself. As interest slowly grew, Banks rented a small studio that could accommodate only a handful of students. The space had no air conditioning, forcing him to personally bring fans to make classes manageable during the warmer months.
Despite the modest setup, his energetic and structured teaching style began attracting a loyal following. Students were drawn not only to the dance lessons but also to the welcoming environment and social connections formed through the classes.
In 2014, Banks officially registered his company and secured his first long-term studio, a move that marked a turning point for the business and laid the foundation for rapid expansion.
Ric Banks Dance Academy
Today, Ric Banks Dance Academy spans 15,000 square feet and is regarded as the largest Latin dance academy in the Middle East and Asia. The academy offers classes in Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba, and Rueda de Casino, alongside other dance styles including Zumba, Hip-Hop, and Reggaeton.
The academy also hosts regular social dance nights and events across Dubai, helping strengthen the city’s growing Latin dance culture.
